Collapse Off Balance On Purpose

Dan Thurmon is the author of two books, a renowned speaker, and a recognized expert in delivering peak performances – on stage and in the workplace. As president of Motivation Works, Inc., he has worked with hundreds of clients and delivered thousands of presentations worldwide. Dan helps organizations and individuals implement action plans and move confidently through transitions.

He began his performance career at eleven years old, crafting a one-man-show incorporating comedy, juggling and acrobatics. This enabled him to, at a very early age, develop a strong work ethic and learn fundamental lessons about performance excellence. Dan graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Marketing and Management. He has also extensively studied Personal Development and developed a unique methodology he teaches to audiences and clients.

As a speaker, Dan Thurmon delivers experiences that go beyond motivation, teaching concepts and skills in a highly engaging and entertaining manner. He incorporates his lifelong performance skills to create high impact events. His programs have educated and uplifted Fortune 500 companies, young audiences, and even the troops on the front lines of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dan’s philosophy can be summarized by the title of his book,  Off Balance On Purpose. He believes that we will never achieve “perfect balance” and should, instead, learn to embrace uncertainty and initiate positive changes that lead to growth. Also, we should go beyond the pursuit of “success” and enhance our life experiences and professional endeavors with purposeful, positive contributions.

    Collapse The End of Membership as We Know It

    The era when associations could count on members joining and renewing, even with a relatively unchanging menu of membership benefits, has passed. Membership is not dead as author Sarah Sladek so eloquently argues in The End of Membership As We Know It. But you do need to change your thinking and your models to adapt to the way participation is changing as a result of the generational shifts in the workforce, social changes, and the technology-eased access to content and community.

    She outlines real, useful advice and plenty of examples for moving your membership model into the future. For example, learn
    • How niche is the new competitive advantage;
    • Why organizational culture has an enormous impact on recruitment and retention;
    • What emerging member-prospects value and want;
    • Why and how to focus on member ROI instead of program ROI;
    • How to craft and deliver compelling benefits rather than features;
    • How to extend your reach; and
    • Which emerging models are taking root and showing promise.

    Concerned about declining engagement in our nation’s membership associations, non-profits, and workplaces, Sarah Sladek founded XYZ University to help organizations bridge generation and talent gaps. Launched in 2002, XYZ University remains one of the only companies in the U.S. dedicated to the generational topic and helping organizations sustain by staying relevant to, and engaging the participation of, Generations X, Y, and Z.

    She is the author of three books. The New Recruit: What Your Association Needs to Know About X, Y, & Z (2007), Rock Stars Incorporated: Hiring the High-Performance, High-Maintenance Hotshots Half Your Age (2008), and The End of Membership As We Know It: Building the Fortune-Flipping, Must-Have Association of the Next Century (2011).

    Collapse  Qualified Association Specialist Program

    FSAE / SAE Partner Member Rate: $295

    Non-Member Rate: 395*

    The Qualified Association Specialist (QAS) Certificate Program provides anyone in the association industry, including CEO’s, a broad base view of the key elements in running an association.

    QAS Partner SAEs

    The QAS program has gathered seasoned experts to present a comprehensive overview of the many facets of working in or with an association – from the legal and financial “business model” of associations’ unique governance/volunteer structure, to understanding the key principles of membership, communications, events, social media/communities, non-dues revenue programs, public policy and data management. These industry leaders share their knowledge with you through 12 online modules, approximately an hour each.

    The QAS program qualifies for 13 CAE credit hours and 13 CMP certification hours through the CIC!

    The program is self-directed and the platform guides you through each module. We've included a "Credit" and "Help" tab in the portal that can answer questions on advancing to the next section as well as accessing your Qualified Association Specialist certificate.

     If you have additional questions about the QAS program, please visit www.associationspecialist.org.

    *How to purchase the program as a Non-FSAE Member
    Click the Login button to the left and Create a New Account. You will need to do this if you are not an FSAE member - even if you have an existing Peach New Media account. Return to the Login screen after creating your account. If you have difficulty accessing the account registration, please click here.

    After logging in, add the QAS program to your basket. Since you are not a member of FSAE, the program will default to the non-member rate. If you have a coupon code from FSAE or a Partner SAE, enter it in the Basket screen to reduce your purchase price.

    Collapse Size doesn’t HAVE to matter … in technology

    Spend too much on more than you need or use technology that stinks? These were the choices for small businesses and many associations. But with cloud-based and software as a service (SAS) offerings, that is no longer the case.

    In this presentation, Derek outlines a few struggles in information technology and shares a number of strategies to resolve them efficiently with an eye towards strategy.

    1. Email and collaboration – This really is the killer app. Don’t let it kill you!

    2. Web development (and development in general) – Your cousin may not be the right call.

    3. Vertical Market software – Yes, you are most likely a vertical market

    4. Support Services – Make them support you!

    5. Virtual Services and how they can help

    Quite often the right answer is strategic partnership as staffing internally is not feasible. Knowing who to partner with, how to partner, and how to determine success becomes critical. Technology really can become an asset. It just takes a change in perspective.
